Gorpcore outfits to try on yourself

Gorpcore is hiking and climbing gear worn in town: fleece jackets, down vests, anoraks, cargo trousers and trail shoes. The appeal is honest function with a deliberately unpolished look. Below are four outfits we made with PublicSelf on our synthetic demo avatars. Each keeps the gear real and adds one move you would not expect.

Background

Where gorpcore comes from

A trend named after trail mix.

A joke name in 2017

The word was coined by Jason Chen in New York magazine's The Cut in 2017, from normcore and gorp, the trail mix hikers carry. At first it described outdoor wear that looked defiantly unfashionable.

A 2020s trend

Gorpcore became mainstream in the 2020s. Some analysts link it to the pandemic, when walks and time outdoors became the main way out of the house.

The brands it put on the street

Wikipedia names The North Face, Patagonia and Arc'teryx among the labels the trend made street-famous. Every piece on this page is brand-free on purpose.

Ideas to compare

What makes an outfit read as gorpcore

Function first, then the city.

One real technical piece

A fleece, a shell, a down vest or trail shoes. The look falls apart when everything is a fashion copy of gear; one piece that could actually go up a hill anchors it.

Outdoor colours, used loudly

Moss, ochre, burnt orange, teal, navy and cream. Colour-blocked panels belong to the vocabulary, and so do layers that do not quite match.

Worn where it is not needed

Trail shoes on a city pavement, a down vest in an office plaza. The setting does half of the styling.

How it works

Build a gorpcore look in the studio

Describe the gear precisely, then take it somewhere ordinary.

  1. Describe the gear like a spec sheet

Name fabric and function in your Look: “moss-green fleece zip jacket, black nylon crossbody sling, chunky grey trail-running shoes.” Words such as ripstop, half-zip, quilted down and taped seams make garments read as technical.

  2. Put it in the city

In Shoot, pick Full-body and Portrait (9:16). A café pavement, a park path or an office plaza makes the point better than a mountain. Describe the place in Describe mode.

  3. Check the details that make gear look real

Zips, toggles, laces, sole tread and strap buckles. If a zip disappears or a strap merges into the jacket, try again with one detail fewer.

In the studio

One surprising move

The outfits here are concepts generated on a synthetic demo avatar, not products you can order, and the gear is deliberately brand-free. A picture cannot tell you whether a jacket is waterproof or warm. Colours can drift: the laces we asked for in lime came out olive.

Material clash

A fleece jacket over a satin slip skirt: soft technical pile against liquid shine.

Context clash

A mountain down vest over a pinstripe shirt and tailored grey trousers.

Deliberate wrongness

Hiking sandals with thick wool socks. It started as a joke and stayed because it works.

Questions

What is gorpcore?

Outdoor and hiking clothing worn as everyday streetwear: fleeces, puffer jackets and vests, anoraks, cargo or hiking trousers and trail shoes.

Which shoes go with gorpcore?

Trail-running shoes, hiking boots or technical sandals, often in loud colourways. Our examples use all three, the sandals with wool socks.

How is gorpcore different from techwear?

Gorpcore borrows real outdoor gear and its colours. Techwear designs city clothes with technical fabrics, mostly in black, with straps and modular pockets. Our techwear page shows the difference.

Can I try gorpcore outfits on myself?

Yes. Create an identity from one clear photo, describe the gear in a Look and generate a full-body portrait. The price is shown on the Generate button before you start.
